Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the practice of inserting single use sterile needles into the body at designated acupuncture points to activate Qi, the body’s vital energy. The purpose of acupuncture is to return the body to homeostasis by alleviating physical, mental and spiritual discomfort. Acupuncture is safe and effective for all adults, children, and pregnant and nursing mothers.

The practice and study of acupuncture is over 3,000 years old and is rooted in the Daoist philosophy. For more information on acupuncture, please read our posts, “What can Acupuncture Treat” and “How to Choose an Acupuncturist.”

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Similarly to acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine is highly effective in returning the body to homeostasis. Herbal prescriptions are customized for each patient and may include one herb or many herbs, otherwise known as a formula. Chinese Herbal Medicine may be used internally and/or externally depending on the concern. Source Medicinal Arts uses only high-grade Chinese herbs in the form of raw herbs, patent, granules or tinctures.

Gua Sha

Gua sha is an adjunct technique to acupuncture. It is often preformed during a treatment session to release tight or restrictive muscles, fascia and connective tissue. This technique is most commonly used on the back. Gua sha incorporates the use of a smooth edged tool, like an Asian soupspoon or smooth shell, to gently scape and move the muscles and tissues of the body. During and after this process, the patient’s skin will produce “sha,” a petechia like eruption that will disappear in 24-48 hours.

Gua sha is provided to patients as need and may be included in acupuncture treatments at no additional cost.

Cupping

Similarly to Gua sha, cupping is an adjunct technique to acupuncture and may be preformed during a treatment session. Traditional cupping uses a sterile heated class cup to create suction on the body. Once the cup is suctioned, the superficial layer of the muscle will subtly be drawn into the cup.  The cups are then either left stationary or moved. Once the cups are removed, a subcutaneous bruise may appear for a few hours or 24-48 hours after treatment. This technique relaxes the muscles, alleviates pain, aids in respiratory, digestive and gynecological issues.

Cupping is provided to patients as needed and may be included in acupuncture treatments at no additional cost. Cupping only appointments are available.
